New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Friday called the Rajasthan government a “serious” about the increase in student suicides in Kota city.

A bench of Justices JB Pardwala and R Mahadevan said that so far 14 suicides were reported from the city.

“What are you doing as a state? These children are dying of suicide and only in quota? Have you not considered as a state?” Justice Pardwala asked the lawyer representing the state of Rajasthan.

The lawyer said that a special investigation team (SIT) was formed in the state to investigate suicide cases.

The apex court was listening to a case on the death of a 22 -year -old student studying in IIT, Kharagpur. The student was found hanging in his hostel room on 4 May. It was also dealing with another case of a girl, who was a led aspiration and was found hanging in her room in Kota where she lived with her parents.

The bench came to know that an FIR was lodged in connection with the death of a student of IIT Kharagpur.

However, the apex court questioned the four -day delay in the FIR which was registered on 8 May.

The bench said, “Do not take these things lightly. These are very serious things.”

The bench mentioned the 24 March verdict of the apex court, which noted the recurring cases of student suicides in higher educational institutions and formed a national work force to remove mental health concerns of students and prevent such incidents.

On Friday, the bench said that it was necessary to file a quick filing of FIR in such cases as per the verdict.

“Why did you take four days to lodge a cedar?” The bench presented in the court, belonging to a police officer.

The official said an FIR was lodged and investigation was going on in the case.

“You continue with investigation according to the law,” the bench told him.

It came on a record that IIT Kharagpur officials alerted the police to know about suicide.

However, the bench was not convinced with the interpretation of IIT Kharagpur lawyer and police officer.

“We could have taken a very strict approach about the case. We could also proceed to contempt against the police officer, who were in -charge of the police station of jurisdiction,” said this.

The bench then avoided saying “anything ahead”, in which the cedar was recorded and the investigation was progressed.

The investigation said, it should be done rapidly in the right direction.

In the case of quota suicide, the bench rejected the non -filing of the FIR.

The state counsel said the investigation in the case was going on and the SIT was aware of the suicide cases in the state.

“How many young students have died in Kota so far?” The bench asked the lawyer.

After 14 after a lawyer, the bench said, “Why are these students dying?” It said that the Task Force constituted by the apex court will take its time before giving a holistic report to the court.

“You are in contempt of our decision. Why have you not registered an FIR?” The bench asked the lawyer of Rajasthan.

The bench said that the student was not living in the residence provided by his institute, which he left in November 2024 and started living with his parents.

The bench said, “However, it was the duty of the police concerned to register and investigate the FIR. The officers in charge of the Regional Police Station have failed their duty. He has not complied with the instructions issued by this court,” the bench said.

As a result, the bench called the concerned police officer in the Kota case on 14 July to explain the situation.
