The Congress demands interrogation of Manipur violence, asks the Center on the table of the white paper

Congress chief and Rajya Sabha leader leader Mallikrajun Kharge on Friday demanded an inquiry into the Manipur violence and asked the Central Government to go to the table of a white paper in the House.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Kharge said that Manipur has been burning for almost two years, and the government has failed to stop violence in the state.

“Manipur has been burning for two years, and the government has failed to stop the violence. More than 260 people have died, and more than 60,000 displaced. The families have been torn, yet the BJP has seen it in silence. Manipur’s economy has fallen. GST collections have fallen. The state said that the state said.

He further said that the then Manipur Chief Minister Biran Singh should have taken responsibility for morale and resigned on the first day of violence.

“BJP is working to save Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but not Manipur. The NGO visited Manipur, but the Prime Minister did not.

The Congress chief further claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has no plans to bring peace in Manipur.

“What are you doing here, please bring peace here (Manipur). The Prime Minister has time for election rallies, but not for Manipur. He failed to bring peace. Therefore, I demand an inquiry and also to put them on the table.

Mallikrajun Kharge urged the Prime Minister to visit Manipur as soon as possible and solve the law and order situation there.

Rajya Sabha Lop and Congress chief Mallikrajun Kharge requested Rajya Sabha President, Jagdeep Dhankhar to be held in the House on Friday morning to discuss Manipur.

Kharge said, “You (Vice President and Chairman Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhikar) are afraid of the government … you should protect us.”

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah transferred the proposal for the Rajya Sabha for the President’s reference to the President’s rule in Manipur.

Shah said, “This House approves the announcement issued by the President on February 13, 2025, under Article 356 (1) of the Constitution in relation to the state of Manipur,” Shah said.

Manipur has been under the President’s rule since February after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, as has been declared by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on 13 February under Article 356 of the Constitution, five days after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post.

Violence in Manipur between Meiteis and Kukis provoked a rally on May 3, 2023 after a rally by All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM).
