Tourists stranded after sudden snowfall in East Sikkim survived

Many tourists were successfully evacuated on Monday.

Officials said many tourists trapped between Tsomgo Lake and Thugs in East Sikkim were successfully evacuated on Monday after a hailstorm and snowfall on Monday.

Tourists and vehicles who were stuck due to unexpected weather conditions were transferred to safe areas by a joint team of Sikkim Police and Indian Army. Officials said there were no casualties or major injuries.

Rescue teams also provided immediate assistance and arranged temporary shelters for the affected people.

On Sunday afternoon, in view of heavy snowfall, the blocking of roads, Nathula near Nathula was closed for tourists and no new permits were issued for the region’s visit on Monday.

On Sunday, several tourist vehicles near Nathula were evacuated after unexpected snowfall blocked roads with the help of Sikkim Police and local residents. Officials said that preventive measures were important to avoid any untoward incident.
