Increased global trade tariffs would harm the weakest and poor people, the United Nations Trade and Development Agency said on Friday that the measures of US President Donald Trump promoted the global alarm.
In a statement, UNCTAD general secretary Rebecca Grispan said that the upcoming trade disturbance “causes weak and poor”.
“Business should not become another source of instability. It should serve development and global development,” Grinspan said.
Trump on Wednesday unveiled a barrage of imported duties against dozens of countries, inspiring China to retaliate and risk that other countries would follow the world economy.
“Global trade rules must develop to reflect today’s challenges, but they should do so with forecast and development in their originals, protecting the weakest people,” Grinspan said.
“This is the time of cooperation – not growth.”
