Industry sources said the legendary Malayalam filmmaker and cinematographer Shaji N Karun, who is known for the distinguished style of films and films, died here on Monday.
He was 73 years old.
He said that Shaji Ann Karun was unwell for some time and was struggling with health issues.
A few days after the famous filmmaker’s death, he was awarded the Jesse Daniel Award, as at a function by the state government, for a lifetime contribution to the highest film honor established by the state government, at a ceremony here.
One of the pioneers of New Wave Cinema in Malayalam, Shaji Neelakantan Karunakaran, known as Shaji Ann Karun, was one of the few filmmakers who took the legacy of Malayalam cinema for international audiences that broke all obstacles.
His first film, ‘Pirvi’ (1988) was screened at around 70 international film festivals, while his second film, ‘Swaham’ (1994), was nominated for Palme D’Or. His ‘Vanaprastham’ (1999) was also displayed in the ear.
Shaji Ann Karun’s films have won seven National Awards and Kerala State Awards. His ‘Kutty Srik’ received the National Award for Best Feature Film in 2010.
Padma Shri and a recipient of French honors “order of art and letter,” Karun was the premiere president of the Kerala State Chalitra Academy.
He also worked as the Chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC).
