Viral video shows a family a family eating Mahaprasad on a dining table in Puri

Mahaprasad is traditionally eaten by sitting on the ground

Temple officials confirmed that it violates the long-standing customs.

Puri:

A video of a family of Mahaprasad from Jagannath Tirtha of Puri on the dining table has stopped a dispute in Odisha. Mahaprasad is the sacred food offered to Lord Jagannath, the god of the 12th century temple, and is traditionally served and eaten by sitting on the ground.

At least 10 family members, including children, were seen on the dining table at a beach resort in Puri, while a priest was serving Mahaprasad.

When a man faced him, a woman claimed that he had asked here and there before deciding to eat on the table. The unknown person then turned to the priest and demanded to know why he allowed it, the video showed.

With the video going viral and raising concerns among Jagannath devotees, temple officials issued a statement stating that it was against the tradition for eating Mahaprasad on the table.

Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) said that it was known about the picture in which Mahaprasad was being eaten on the table, which was against the tradition and created a “response” from devotees.

The Mahaprasad is divine and should be eaten on the ground, SJTA said, requested the devotees to maintain the centuries -old traditions of the temple.

“It is clarified from the side of the temple that the divine Mahaprasad of the Lord is worshiped as Annabrahma. The ritual tradition of eating Mahaprasad sitting on the ground is present since time. So all the devotees are humbly requested that they are against avoiding the tradition.

In view of local emotions and religious beliefs, temple officials have also asked the hotel in Puri to warn their guests against such activities.
