Waqf Bill Discussion breaks records for the longest debate in Rajya Sabha

Last week, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha did not come as another decisive moment of the widespread and rigorous debate parliamentary journey, but it also set a new benchmark by scripting the new record of the longest discussion in the history of the Upper House.

The debate on Waqf Bill 2025 in the Rajya Sabha also saw unprecedented debate and fierce exchange, and crossed the last longest debate in 1981 and proceeded to a stretch for more than 17 hours.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday resorted to social media to share the glimpses of the longest discussion in the Rajya Sabha.

Taking X in X, Mr. Rijiju shared the pictures and wrote: “Moss Arjun Ram Meghwal, Murugan, Secretary, ADL Secretary and JS in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Discussion on the Waqf Amendment Bill for 17 hours, broke the discussion time on the earlier record time (16 hours 55 minutes) in 1981 in Rajya Sabha!”

April 3, the yearning of the budget session, saw the Rajya Sabha sitting for his longest time in the history of the house, which lasted from 11:00 am to 4:02 am the next day.

After the passage of the Waqf Bill from both the houses of Parliament, Mr. Rijiju spoke to the Newsman on Friday and called it a new record in parliamentary proceedings and a will for dramatic discussion without disintegration.

A day earlier, the Lok Sabha approved the bill after a 12 -hour long marathon debate.

Rajya Sabha President Jagdeep Dhikar also welcomed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 as a “historical law” and called it a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dialogue and shared objectives.

Mr. Dhankhar congratulated the members of the Upper House for joining the “unprecedented” and said, “The Rajya Sabha named its name in the history of legislative history.”

He said, “Sitting started at 11 am on April 3 and continued till the next 4.02 pm, on this day, the longest in his history,” he said, the members supplemented the members for their 17 -hour initiative to debate the law.

He said, “It will send a very great message to the people on a large scale and will increase confidence in this great institution. Once again with the Rajya Sabha, the democratic standards worth simulation have been set by others,” he said.

Overall, the Rajya Sabha worked for a total of 159 hours in the budget session, with productivity of 119 percent.
